Moving into a new space is an exciting experience, but before unpacking and settling in, it’s essential to give each room a thorough cleaning. Even if the previous occupant cleaned before leaving, starting fresh ensures your new home is hygienic, comfortable, and truly yours.

Start with a Plan
Before you begin, gather your cleaning supplies: gloves, disinfectants, microfiber cloths, a mop, broom, vacuum, and trash bags. Start from the top of the room (ceiling and walls) and work your way down to the floor — this helps prevent dust from resettling on clean surfaces.

Ceilings, Walls, and Fixtures
Dust the ceiling and corners to remove cobwebs. Wipe down light fixtures, fans, and vents with a damp cloth. Clean the walls, especially around switches and door frames, as these areas often collect dirt and fingerprints.

Windows and Mirrors
Clean windows inside and out using a glass cleaner or vinegar solution. Don’t forget the window sills and tracks, which can collect dust and debris. Clean any mirrors with a lint-free cloth for a streak-free finish.

Closets and Cabinets
Empty and wipe down all closets, shelves, and drawers. If needed, line the shelves with paper or liners before placing your belongings.

Flooring
Vacuum carpets thoroughly. Consider a deep carpet clean if the previous residents had pets or the carpet has stains or odors. Sweep and mop hard floors with an appropriate cleaner for the surface type (wood, tile, vinyl, etc.).

Sanitize High-Touch Areas
Disinfect door handles, light switches, thermostat panels, and any remotes or control panels in the room.

Air It Out
Open windows to let in fresh air and reduce any lingering odors from cleaning products or the previous occupants.
